SUBSTITUTE BUS OPERATOR QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Must hold high school diploma or GED.
- Must currently hold or obtain a valid WVDE School Bus Operator Certification.
- Must Pass a physical examination and drug test.
- Must hold or obtain a valid CDL licensure with P and S endorsements.
- Must hold or obtain a valid First Aide/CPR Card.
- Agree to participate in any required pre-service and in-service trainings.
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Support Services and Transportation Coordinator
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Substitute should exhibit professional behavior by showing positive examples of preparedness, communication, fairness, punctuality, attendance, language and appearance. Substitute must contribute, cooperate, and participate in creating an environment in which all employees/students are accepted and are provided an opportunity to achieve at the highest levels in all areas of development. Maintain a safe and healthy environment free from harassment, intimidation, bullying, abuse, violence and free from discrimination. Assist maintaining a culture of caring through understanding and support. Comply with all Federal, State of West Virginia and Doddridge County Schools laws, policies and procedures.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Be prompt in meeting students and their parents at scheduled bus stops.
- Provide for security and safety of all students on the bus.
- Maintain discipline on the bus to insure minimal distraction, thus providing safe operation of the bus.
- Provide for safety and ease of loading and unloading students.
- Insure proper exchanges are made when transferring transportation responsibilities.
- Implement all rules, regulations, and policies governing transportation of pupils.
- Perform specific duties in accordance with instructions received from the Director of Student Support Services.
- Perform preventive maintenance operations and care of the bus in accordance with instruction from the Director of Student Support Services.
- Keep in contact with the Director of Student Support Services when inclement weather or other conditions may cause a change in the dismissal hour.
- Monitor route in order to make decision about running the route. Notify the families on the route of the decision when run will not be made.
- Report to bus periodically when school is closed because of weather conditions and check starting ability, remove snow, put on chains, etc.
- Notify the Director of Student Support Services at least a day before he is to be absent. (Emergencies do not apply to this ruling.)
- Instruct students in the proper procedure to cross a highway.
- Observe all speed limits (40 MPH maximum on secondary roads), regulate speed according to road conditions. Use chains where any part of the bus route may be considered hazardous. Use headlights at all times.
- Participate in staff development activities as directed.
TERM: As Needed- Substitute contract to begin the 2025-2026 school term.
