ITINERANT SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

 

  1. Hold Master’s Degree/Valid West Virginia Certification/Licensure for a Speech and Language Pathologist for grades Prek-Adult.
  2. Meet minimum standards for certification as set forth by the West Virginia Department of Education in Minimum Standards for Licensure of West Virginia School Personnel.
  3. Satisfactory evaluations and/or recommendations from professional associates, employers and/or supervisors.
  4. Exhibits knowledge of the duties and responsibilities as demonstrated in the personal interview.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively with students, school personnel and parents.
  6. Educational philosophy comparable with the Doddridge County Board of Education philosophy, mission statement and core beliefs.
  7. Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  8. Ability to motivate students and get them excited about learning.
  9. Exhibits knowledge of current instructional technologies. 

 

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal and/or Director of Instructional Services.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

All professional educators must: maintain valid educator licensure at all times, renew educator licenses as set forth by WVDE, maintain positive work habits, perform duties as assigned and directed, maintain and upgrade professional skills, communicate effectively and exhibit professional teaching knowledge and strategies.  

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

             

  1. Identifies speech, language and hearing problems within the school environment through both screening and diagnostic methodology.
  2. Coordinates and schedules therapeutic caseloads in conjunction with each school staff.
  3. Provides a therapeutic program to meet the individual needs of speech and language in the confines of the school environment.
  4. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
  5. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.
  6. Provides for participates in inservice training in all associated areas of the field of speech, language and hearing as well as special education.
  7. Participates in Annual Speech and Hearing Screenings: a) administers speech, languange and pure tone screening to grade levels agreed upon by speech and hearing staff and the Director of Student Instructional Services; b) contacts the parents of the children failing speech and hearing screening for further speech, lannguage, medical or audiological evaluations;  c) records results of screenings in WVEIS. 
  8. Provides information, support and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
  9. Participates in SAT meetings when applicable or invited.
  10. Participates in and follows Doddridge County Search and Serve procedures for placing students in the Speech-Language Therapeutic program:  a) serves as a member of the Eligibility Committee for Special Education Students when invited; b) attends IEP meetings and completes speech/language portion of IEP when applicable; c) arranges Eligibility Committee meetings with personnel and parents when student's only area of concern is speech/language.
  11. Makes confidential files for school and special education files for speech and language students only.
  12. Transfers confidential files for speech/language students only when placement has changed within Doddridge County.
  13. Makes referrals to other specialist when applicable.
  14. Serves as a consultant to those county schools not directly providing special language and learning services.
  15. Maintains a list of each child individually screened for speech, language and hearing with the names of the students, grade level and screening results.
  16. Provides information pertaining to speech and language development and speech, language and hearing services to PTO meetings or Early Childhood parent group meetings when invited by school personnel.
  17. Prepares written reports for each student individually screened and/or evaluated for speech, language and/or hearing problems and delivers these reports to the Director of Student Instructional Services.
  18. Prepare and maintain therapy logs documenting student name, date, time, length of therapy and progress toward goals.
  19. Follow procedures for billing medicaid, completing service care plans and obtaining prescriptions for evaluation and therapy.

TERM:  200-day contract (To begin the remainder of the 2018-2019 school year).
